The Place & Producers
Located in southern Huila, Timaná is a region steeped in history—named after the indigenous Timanaes people and famous for La Gaitana, an indigenous warrior woman who led a legendary resistance movement in the 1530s. Today, that legacy of female strength lives on through the Women’s Coffee Program at the ASPROTIMANA cooperative.
While women represent about 31% of Colombian coffee farmers, they have historically faced barriers to land ownership and financial independence. This lot brings together 25 smallholder female producers who farm small plots intercropped with plantains, beans, and shade trees. We are thrilled to bring this coffee back for our second year in a row, and it has earned a permanent place at our bars as the daily foundation for both our house drip and house espresso.
Beyond the Cup:
-
Fair Compensation: Women producers process their own harvest, delivering dry parchment directly to cooperative purchasing stations. Passing strict moisture and cupping criteria unlocks a guaranteed premium above local market rates.
-
Capital & Training: Supported by Colombia's SENA learning institute, ASPROTIMANA provides members with direct access to credit alongside ongoing workshops covering farm management, coffee quality, and leadership.
-
Cooperative Scale: Founded in 2001 by 32 farmers, ASPROTIMANA has expanded to over 850 member families across 22 villages, building long-term community infrastructure throughout Timaná.
Precision Harvesting & Processing
Every producer in this collective manages harvest and post-harvest operations on her own farm:
-
Selective Hand Picking: Ripe cherries are selectively harvested by hand across steep micro-plots in the Andean foothills.
-
Farm-Level Micro-Milling: Cherries are depulped and fermented at individual farm wet mills using traditional washed methods.
-
Tailored Sun Drying: Depending on each farm’s microclimate, parchment is sun-dried on open patios or raised solar beds for 15 to 25 days before being delivered to the cooperative for final physical separation and export.
