The Place & Producers Gachatha factory sits on 391 acres in the heart of Nyeri, beautifully situated between Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. This historic coffee-growing region features rich volcanic soil and abundant fresh mountain water. The factory serves about 1,050 local cooperative members, most of whom are smallholders tending to roughly 300 trees on less than a hectare of land.
Because the surrounding area is densely populated, the Gachatha community takes exceptional care of their environment. The factory uses dedicated soak pits for water treatment to prevent the contamination of local fresh-water sources, and the community actively works to preserve indigenous plant life to protect local wildlife.
We source this exceptional microlot through our importing partners at Cafe Imports. We choose to work with Cafe Imports because of their decades-long commitment to transparency and ethics in Kenya. By embedding their green buyers on the ground during the harvest season, they bypass standard bulk auctions to select small, traceable day-lots based strictly on cup quality, ensuring excellent premiums make it back to the Gachatha cooperative.
Processing This coffee is processed using Kenya's traditional double-washed method, utilizing the region's clean mountain water.
Cherries are picked ripe and depulped the same day, then fermented in open-air concrete tanks for 24–48 hours. After a thorough wash through channels, the parchment undergoes a unique underwater soak lasting 12–72 hours. Finally, the coffee is spread evenly across raised drying beds, resulting in a remarkably clean, high-clarity cup profile.
In the Cup A bright, structured profile featuring strong, complex malic acidity balanced by deep sugary sweetness. You may find notes of:
-
cacao and burnt sugar
-
savory accents
-
crisp apple (malic acidity)
A Classic Kenyan Profile Representing a blend of classic Kenyan varieties like SL28 and SL34 alongside modern cultivars, this lot delivers the unmistakable punch and depth that Nyeri coffees are famous for. It is an incredibly expressive, sweet, and complex cup that highlights the benefits of meticulous cooperative processing and intentional sourcing.
