Geisha coffees can be truly special. The producers who put in the work growing and harvesting these rare genetics give us an opportunity to drink a cup of coffee that sometimes defies description, and certainly defies the expectation of taste we have for coffee. This geisha, a great example of washed geisha coffees, brings the experience of drinking tea, juice, and coffee all together into one moment. Reflecting the incredible environment it was grown in, lush tropical and citrus fruits accompany an almost impossible sweetness. Delicate florals accompany every sip- without overwhelming. And it's all a display of the craft of Lucio Luque.
Lucio is a member of the Incahuasi Cooperative of coffee farmers, situated in the Incahuasi Valley of Peru, at an astonishing 2200 meters above sea level. Nuevo Progresso is the name of the parcel of his farm where the Geisha is grown, and it is the only section of the farm to be planted with only one varietal. Initially thought to be planted with a rare Kenya-bred varietal, SL-09, some testing done at World Coffee Research on the genetics of the bean shows that the coffee is, in fact, a Geisha. There are some differences from the varieties famously grown in Panama called Geisha, but overall there is no doubt this is closely related, totally unique, and absolutely special.
